Using Your Mobility Scooter Safely in Shops and Public Buildings

Back to Mobility Advice Centre

Recent government legislation has made it mandatory for all new public buildings to give access to the disabled. The law also specifies things like door widths and ramp gradients as well as wheelchair-friendly lifts. So new buildings will be far more easy to get around than ones which were built before these regulations came into force.

Virtually all supermarkets and even many quite small shops are wheelchair and scooter accessible, though larger scooters will not be able to get in to as many places as smaller ones. Don't forget, you are responsible for any damage you cause to shop fittings or displays or any harm you cause to other shoppers or shop staff. Reduce your speed and keep alert. Don't get distracted and forget to watch where you are going. Staff are there to help, and in most cases the general public also likes to help out when they are asked politely. So there is no need to risk demolishing a display by over-stretching yourself to grab something slightly out of your reach. Please be aware of changing displays at seasonal periods.
