Using your scooter on pavements and crossings

Full Service Mobility ScooterClass 2 wheelchairs and scooters are really only designed to travel on pavements. As they are limited to 4mph, they are not suitable for driving on the road. Obviously you will need to cross roads and the safest place to do this is at a pedestrian crossing. Pelican Crossings have traffic lights which will stop the flow of traffic and give you plenty of time to cross. Zebra Crossings give pedestrians the right of way while they are on the crossing. When using a Zebra Crossing on a mobility scooter or powerchair you will have the same priority as a pedestrian. Both types of crossing have dropped kerbs at either side which make life much easier for the wheelchair or scooter user.

Taking care amongst pedestrians

Pedestrians have the right of way on pavements and you are responsible for avoiding running into them. You are also responsible for any damage that you might cause by running into property, pavement shop signage, etc. so take care to watch where you are going, and be aware at all times that pedestrians can often change direction without warning, or just stop without warning in front of you.

Keep a safe distance away from people, especially old people who may be hard of hearing or have poor eyesight. Be equally wary of children who can often behave unpredictably. As a general rule, most people are helpful and willing to oblige, especially when asked politely to move out of the way. Sadly this is not true of everyone and there will always be the odd ignorant person who refuses to be reasonable. Stay calm and don't submit to 'pavement rage'. Do not attempt to push past if there is someone in the way.
