Ferries

Ports in the UK vary enormously as to the level of facilities they provide for disabled people. It is best to check with the ferry companies and your travel agent if you use one. Ascertain whether the terminal building is fully accessible for wheelchairs and what provision they have for getting a wheelchair user to and from the ferry.

The more modern passenger ferries are equipped with lifts and wheelchair accessible toilets, but some older ferries which are still in service may not cater for disabled passengers. It is therefore most important to check before booking your ticket, as this may be an important factor in choosing which company you want to travel with. When you do book, ensure that the ferry operator understands fully the level of help you will need when you arrive at their terminal.

Some car ferry companies offer concessions to disabled drivers. You are more likely to qualify for concessions if you are a member of the Disabled Driver's Association, the Disabled Driver's Motor Club or the Disabled Motorists Federation.

Many companies which do short crossings operate open deck ferries which allow you to stay in your car during the crossing.
