Air Travel for disabled people
Back to Mobility Advice Centre
The majority of airlines are equipped to deal with wheelchair passengers, though some charge extra for the help they will need to provide.
Check with individual airlines what their policies and charges (if any) are. You will not be allowed to travel in your own chair but must transfer into an airline seat for the duration of the flight.
You may need to fill in a special form called 'Incapacitated Passenger Handling Advice' to notify the airline of your specific needs so that they can arrange the appropriate help for you. Most airlines will carry your electric wheelchair or scooter provided they are fitted with the correct sealed lead acid or gel batteries which will be disconnected for the duration of the flight.
