Trains

As of 2004 all trains are theoretically accessible to wheelchair users. All modern InterCity trains now are required to have space in their carriages where a wheelchair user can remain seated in his or her wheelchair. However you should bear in mind that these spaces are quite limited and you will almost certainly require help from railway staff to get on and off the train using ramps which the station should provide. You are strongly advised to phone the stations at either end of your journey to warn them that you will be needing their help, and allow plenty of time for getting to the station and boarding the train.

Although all modern local trains are also accessible to wheelchair users via the portable ramp, the same is not true of all local stations. Nor are all local stations manned, so there may be no one there to help. You obviously need to check with the transport provider before planning your journey.

Eurotunnel

A viable alternative to a car ferry for travel to Europe with your car is the Eurotunnel Shuttle which runs from Folkestone to Coquelles through the Channel Tunnel. The passenger terminals at either end have all amenities on the ground floor and are modern enough to provide full disabled access. However, if you think you will need assistance, be sure to let staff know at the time of booking.

You can remain in your car for the duration of the journey on the Shuttle, but if necessary a member of staff will be able to assist you to a toilet using a specially designed wheelchair very similar to those used in aircraft.

You can telephone Eurotunnel Customer Services Centre on 08705 353535 or visit the website at www.eurotunnel.co.uk
