Transporting yourself in a Wheelchair
Back to Mobility Advice Centre
You should not travel in a vehicle whilst seated in your wheelchair unless that vehicle has been equipped with a WTORS (wheelchair tie-down and restraint system). There are different systems which usually include special clamps to secure the wheelchair to the floor, combined with a seatbelt or harness to secure the user within the chair. Your wheelchair should be of an approved crash tested type, and should be facing forwards, not sideways, as there is very little lateral strength in a wheelchair.
Access to the vehicle can be gained by ramps or one of a variety of lifting devices. If you are planning to ride your wheelchair up a ramp into a car, ensure that the ramp’s capacity is sufficient to bear the combined weight of you and your wheelchair, and that they have at least 6"-10" extra width on each side of the chair to allow a margin for safety when manoeuvering the chair on the ramp.
