Ramps

There are different types of ramp available to help get your wheelchair or scooter into and out of your car, assuming of course that the height of your car’s rear door will accommodate the mobility vehicle. The majority of users will still need help. You will need an estate car or a people carrier (because they have level access and no boot lip) for use with ramps. Your wheelchair or scooter can power itself with ease up the ramps directly into and out of the back of the vehicle.

Hoists

There’s a variety of hoists available to lift your wheelchair or scooter into the car. They can be installed in different positions in the car, depending on where you want your wheelchair to end up. Possible options are the boot, the back of the car and, in the case of folding chairs, onto the door. Some of these devices are limited to lifting only one type of machine e.g. a manual wheelchair or a lightweight scooter, but there other more versatile (and expensive) ones which can cope with heavier loads. All hoists have a maximum weight capacity, so be sure to check that the hoist you are considering is able to lift your scooter or powerchair easily. When considering the purchase of a hoist, we recommend you buy an over-engineered one capable of lifting a much heavier weight than you may require at present. By doing this, you will never need to buy another hoist. When the time comes to change your car, simply remove your hoist from the old car and have it installed in the new one.

Trailers

If your car is not big enough to accommodate your wheelchair or scooter, you might consider buying a trailer. Towbars and power sockets can be fitted for £100 to £150 and small, lightweight trailers are available from car accessory shops from £200 - £400. Do remember before opting to buy a trailer that your cars legal speed limit will be reduced to 50mph. Reversing a car with a trailer attached requires a particular skill and technique. You will need to practise in a wide open space (like an empty car park) to develop your reversing skills.
