Transporting your mobility scooter or powerchair in your car
As you are probably aware, there are many different types of wheelchair and moblity scooter and even more types of car and van in which to transport them. Which option you choose will depend firstly on whether or not you intend to travel in your wheelchair or whether you can travel independently from the chair.
When deciding what scooter/powerchair/car combination to choose, DO NOT start by buying a snazzy car you happen to fancy, then tell us that whatever scooter/powerchair we supply must fit into the boot! The chances are you will be very restricted in your choice of scooter/powerchair and generally unhappy with the result. (“What do you mean, this car’s no good for my purposes – I’ve only just bought it!”
DESIGN YOUR TRANSPORT SYSTEM AROUND YOU, NOT YOUR CAR!
First, find a scooter or powerchair in which you feel comfortable and confident, then choose a car into which it will fit. If you get your choices right, you will re-gain many freedoms you may have lost through disability or infirmity. You will be free to go where you want, when you want. Your life, and the lives of family and friends will change for the better because you thought it through.
