Rough Terrain
Back to Mobility Advice Centre

If you need a mobility scooter which is capable of traversing rough terrain - perhaps you like to go fishing, to car boot sales, agricultural shows, or other events which are held outdoors in fields - there are some extra things you need to look out for when selecting your mobility scooter or powerchair.
Most obviously, pay attention to ground clearance - a scooter designed to run on smooth surfaces may have a much smaller ground clearance than one which is designed for more rugged use. The size of the machine's footprint will determine its overall stability - the bigger the footprint, the more stability it will offer on uneven surfaces.

You will need to consider also the torque and power of the electric motor - it takes a lot more power to push you and your vehicle up and down the rough surfaces of a field than to glide along a well-kept pavement or tarmac road.
We sell quite a lot of mobility scooters suitable for off-road use to farmers and landowners, but please don't forget these machines are not a substitute for a quad bike or a tractor and will only function well in DRY conditions! They are NOT designed to tackle muddy fields and rocky outcrops. Be realistic in your expectations of the machine's performance.
